What to pack for Anguilla - LADIES

I have seen many posts regarding what to bring in terms of books, electronics, school supplies, but I haven't see any
geared towards "feminine necessities" lol ...I'm not talked tampons and such but things like hairdryers, styling tools etc.
I know this is kind of vain topic, but for some of us it's a fine line between sanity and total chaos in life!

I would like to know (from any forthcoming female students) what were the necessities you packed, wish you have packed and can
easily buy over on the island?

(1) I use a hairdryer and flat iron on my hair a couple of times a week, and would any of you girls recommend cutting your hair before coming to the island? I have longer (below shoulder length) hair that's wavy and thick. In the humidity is it all hard to style hair or does everyone just throws it up into a bun/pony and call it a day? The less time I can spend in the morning "managing" my appearance the better!

(2) Cosmetics - can one buy things like decent mascara (for those who are fair haired and need to define those blond lashes)? What about products such as face creams with SPF? What SPF would you recommend to bring 30? 50?? I'm fair skinned, easily affected by the sun and turn red like a lobster when I burn.

(3) Are there places on the island to get a haircut? waxing?

(4) As for clothes - what do you girls end up wearing most often? shorts? skirts? How many nice outfits do we need to bring and what clothes do you mostly "live in" while on the island? Are there places to buy tank-tops, sandals, shorts etc?

(5) Handbags, Backpacks, Cross-body bags??? What is most practical to bring to school everyday? Are there a lot of books one has to carry?

Any feedback would be great!

MD 1 & 2 Books for January 2013

Hey all - does anyone know if the BRS books are still recommended to bring for the 2013 semesters? I've read medstulife's blog about what books we should buy / not buy, but that's from 2011. Has anything changed?

Thanks in advance!

Bonaire Immigration/room/books/etc

Hi,

I am posting this thread in hopes of getting some sjsm students from bonaire to reply, and also students who have just been admitted and are going through the immigration process. anything will help me.
so i want to apply to Bonaire campus but have been hearing that immigration is a longggg process as the govt. on the island changed? Can someone plz let me know how the school helps you once youre accepted, or what needs to be turned in, does it all go to the chicago office, any more money we need to be shelling out to give to the immigration, how long it takes to receieve visas, any info would really be helpful. I am from chicago btw.

what books and other things should we bring that may be of use there? and are rooms available for students when they go out 5 days before classes start (jan2013)? sorry im asking alot..its just that i am still confused :/

Thanks for all the help! :)

Curacao vs BOnaire Immigration Rules.

I checked out the immigration documents required for another medical school in curacao and one with St James. They are both Netherlands Antilles but how come Bonaire requires much more documents.

OSAP for St James

hey did anyone get OSAP for SJSM , i know the school has been established for over 10 years now?

can someone tell me if we can obtain OSAP now?

clinical spots rumors...

Hi... I've been accepted to St James recently and I've been doing research on the school. I've heard of rumors that there arent enough spots for clinicals and students often get denied entry into the clinical sciences program as a result.

Can someone else confirm this?

Think 10 times before attending SJSM!

If I would have known what I know abut this school now, I would have never attended. The school administration does not care about the well being the students in the least. Their main goal is to make money and it shows every step of the way.

To give you a few reasons as to why you should not attend this school.

1) exams are leaked. The students who have the exams will pass. Those who don't are outta luck. The exams are leaked from within if you know what I mean?

2) the school does not care about facilities. Toilets do not work at times, there is no Internet for days at a time because the school claims that it can afford equipment, projectors do not work, batteries for the projector remote are not available, classrooms do not have enough chairs and those that they do have are mostly broken, there are cockroaches in the classrooms, the rooms don't get cleaned well, the A/C never works so it's almost always over 90-95 in class.

3) you will never ever get a straight answer to a single question you may have whether it may be about exams, rotations, topics covered etc

4)A certain professor at the Anguilla campus is easily persuadable and if you are a young pretty girl, you will go far.

5)A LOT of the faculty is unqualified to teach the subjects they are hired to teach. A few examples at the Anguilla campus are the biochem professors. The BOTH of them teach the subject matter WRONG as does the anatomy and neuroprofessor. They teach the subject matter all wrong and then Insist that the books are wrong and that they are right!

6) the school is quick to take your money but it ends there. The school refuses to contribute anything but $20 per student for the white coat ceremony so instead of concentrating on studying, students have to find ways to raise $$ for their white coat ceremony by methods such as bake sales etc. If I wanted to be a baker, I would have never gone to medical school!

7) there is a lot of corruption at the school with professors accepting gifts from students. 3 students in my class failed all of their exams in md1 and md2 and still made it to md3 and later to md4.

8)most of the professors could care less about the students scholastic future and they make it very obvious.

9) favoritism is openly displayed towards students who are doing well because they have leaked exams or the exam material has been given to them. I say this with confidence because I have had a professor give me exam material that was going to be on the blocks. Exact questions and answers. In the long run, the professor was not doing me a favor. I now realize that.

10) the school promises to help resolve immigration issues but students are only there on tourists visas and have constant troubles with the anguillian immigration officials.

The bottom line here is..don't come to this school. Study hard and do well on the MCAT so that you don end up here.

Anguilla fall 2013

Hey guys, I'm starting sept 2013. Just curious if anyone on here will be in the same class and would like to get acquainted. Also if any previous/current students that have any good/bad information to share I'd love to read all about it.

any way to practice in california? and other state approval questions

Hey guys...
I'm wondering if anyone who graduated from this school is practicing in California, or a state that follows California's approved/disapproved list.
Last I checked, SJSM is not disapproved but it isnt approved either. I wanted to know if it was possible to practice in California, TX, or NY as a SJSM grad.

I know it sounds weird that I chose the 3 most strict states... but I have strong ties to each of those states (incl. Illinois but I'd rather be in those states incld. Michigan)

Please help and advise.

PDI in md4

How I Passed USMLE Step 1

Hey guys, just a quick reminder, a detailed post has been posted on my blog regarding how I passed the USMLE Step 1 at How I Passed the USMLE Step 1 ~ Medical School Memoirs

A quick info is what I used to study for the USMLE Step 1.
I used several resources to grasp the medical concept. I had to use multiple items because one tool is better than the other in one subject but not in all subjects. I used the following resources:
- Dr. Najeeb Video Lectures
- Kaplan Medical Video Lectures
- Doctors in Training Video Lectures
- Pathoma
- USMLERx Questions
- USMLE World Questions
- First Aid for the USMLE Step 1
- NBME & USMLE World Assessment Exams

Hi. Does any one know what the present status of the schools accreditation in Bonaire is. I am heard a variety of rumors that the school has to comply with certain requirements failing which they will loose their IMED status. Any information? Thanks

Well organized, simplified, study notes for MD1 - MD 4 classes

Whats going on guys

So to anyone starting MD 1 in Anguilla or Bonaire campus, I'd like to welcome you guys and wish you all the best as you embark on this journey of life long dedication and commitment to medicine.

I have all the notes from MD 1 - MD 4 well structured and neatly organized plus a few more additional resources that will tremendously benefit you through your medical career. This will give you an edge over your entire class which is important to separate the elite students from the average. My notes include Anatomy, Histo, Embryo, Pharm, Path, Physio, Neuro, Biochem, Genetics, Epi and more. You will not have any problems in class, as long as you follow through.

I'm selling all my notes and resources for $100, reason being I'm collecting funds for the sandy storm victims including myself. I'm from New York and was also impacted by the devastation of storm sandy, so I started collecting funds from wherever I can to aid the victims that were affected deeply.

If you are interested, I do use Paypal. You can get a hold of me at honorrollmd at gmail dot com

Greatly appreciate it, thank you and good luck! :D
