SJSM does not yet meet the approval requested by America

ORANJESTAD (RCN) -- The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) is not the one who closes the doors of the St. James School of Medicine (SJSM) on Bonaire.

The SJSM got three years from the American Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to meet the quality requirements of the Netherlands for recognition. The SJSM has not yet succeeded in obtaining a positively assessed of the Nederlandse Vlaamse Accreditatie Organisatie (NVAO). This means that the training can not be recognized by the Netherlands. This emerges from information from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), in response to the reports about the possible closure of SJSM and questions from worried students. It is important for OCW that the situation is clear for all parties.

Conditions

The St. James School of Medicine, like the other Medical Schools in the Caribbean, is an institution of higher education under American law, which aimed at achieving the American degree of Medical Doctor. Recognition by the Netherlands is important for the St. James School of Medicine, because recognition is a condition stipulated by the ECFMG to remain registered in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED). IMED provides an overview of international Medical Schools which are recognized by the government of the country of establishment. Only students of Medical Schools listed in the IMED may participate in the American exams which, when successfully completed, leads to the degree of Medical Doctor.

Rules

The Dutch government is aware of the economic importance of the Medical Schools for the islands of the Dutch Caribbean. The Netherlands applies the same rules as the Netherlands Antilles did: a Medical School may teach as a private company in the Dutch Caribbean, there is no permission needed from the Dutch government for that. Recognition by the Dutch government is not mandatory, but if a medical school wants to be recognized by the Dutch Minister of OCW, the school must meet the Dutch legal requirements for quality higher education, as required by the Wet hoger onderwijs en wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Recognition by the Dutch government is therefore a guarantee for students that the education is of good quality. It is also important for employers who want to hire the graduates. For recognition by the Netherlands accreditation of the Nederlandse Vlaamse Accreditatie Organisatie (NVAO) is required, and subsequently, a positive assessment of the Inspectorate of Education. All Medical Schools located in the Dutch Caribbean have been informed of this on October 13th, 2010 through a joint letter from the Ministers of OCW and VWS.

Accreditation

In 2010, The SJSM started the procedure for approval by the Dutch Minister of OCW with submission of the application to NVAO for accreditation. Mid-2012 the SJSM has withdrawn its application to NVAO, before the NVAO could give an opinion about the quality of education in the accreditation decision. Assessments by the NVAO are published on the website of the NVAO Home - www.nvao.net . On this site the positive accreditation decision by the NVAO relating to the Saba University School of Medicine (SUSOM) can be found.

Postponement

The American ECFMG has determined that the Medical Schools in the Dutch Caribbean must be recognized by the Netherlands before October 1st, 2013 to remain registered. If SJSM wants a postponement of that date, the SJSM will have to arrange that themselves with ECFMG. Subsequently, it is up to ECFMG, not to the Dutch Minister of OCW, to take a decision on the postponement of that date.

Better questions to ask are:

Q: Hi can any one tell me if CMU has any student in residency in the US?

A: obviously no.

Q: Hi can any one tell me if CMU has falsified transcripts for USMLE?

A: yes.

Q: Would I be allowed to falsify the transcripts if I transfer out from SJSM?

A: in a heartbeat.

Q: Would I be allowed to sit in USMLE step 1 exam?

A: Yes

Q: Would I be allowed to get into Residency?

A: Maybe.

Q: Would I be allowed to get licensure to practice medicine after residency in US?

A: No. Not in million years.

So my friends you have two choices : make your choices now or find the answer the hard way. As for me, I just wasted one year and my parents money.

Rumors about CMU!!!

I was checking about Caribbean Medical University, Curacao and found something really weird about this school which I want to share here so I can save money, time and precious career of the students. Read below...

Caribbean Medical University has a court case against it for forgery/falsification of the signature of minister of Curacao in 2008 to obtain Charter to run a medical school. I am so much thankful to GOD for saving my career by alerting me before I join this school but now I am concern for the students who are studying in this bogus medical school. GOD BLESS THEM!!!!

Truth from the student of 2007 batch of CMU!!!

Few days back I thanked GOD for saving my career and here we go, I got solid proof of CMU signature forgery issue. One student told me not to reveal his name for telling me all these but he told me that he was a student of CMU in 2007 and when CMU did this signature forgery in 2008 he got scare because of uncertainty of this school's future and he took transfer from CMU to another medical school and he is happy because of his decision and so I am. According to Curacao's rules and regulations medical school need a permission from Minister of Education in the form of Charter which is not genuine in this case.

Wasup guys,

First of all congrats on being accepted to St James. From here on, it's an uphill battle as you embark on this long journey of medicine. I do have my notes all neatly organized and well written that I'm selling. I graduated a while back and from my experience have nothing but wonderful things to say about St James and it's faculty members. If you like to inquire more about the school, or have any other questions please shoot me a message. My notes plus additional resources which I used for Step 1 prep, I can sell it to you which would be a better investment rather than buying books or additional items that is not necessary. If you are interested, please message me. Thank you, good luck with everything! :)

Information I've Collected: Anguilla Fall 2013

Hello I will be going to Anguilla for Fall 2013, and I wanted to help people looking for Information. It is hard to find answers so I thought I would help.
This post is basically all the information I’ve gathered from forums and asked from a friend of mine who has been on Anguilla for 15 months. It is by no means definitive, feel free to post more info or add to something I’ve missed or gotten wrong.

Flight Options:

On Jetblue you can get round trip tickets for approx. $850 depending on when you book. You can get better prices if you leave from a major airport.

Be careful booking a one way flight to Anguilla because immigration is going to ask for proof that you aren’t some kind of runaway. You will have to show proof you are going to the island for school. Basically you will be asked to prove without a doubt that your stay is temporary. It’s easier to book a roundtrip to avoid complications.

Best pricing is taking a flight from your location to St. Maarten. Flights directly to Anguilla requires a transit flight on a smaller plane, and generally costs more.

From St. Maarten you take a taxi from the airport to the ferry that will take you to Anguilla.
Cab in St. Marteen to Ferry Port to Anguilla: Approx. $ 20
Ferry to Anguilla from St. Marteen: $ 15 per person
Cab in Anguilla to Hotel: Approx. $ 30

Customs:

Customs in Anguilla won’t really bother you as long as the items you have are deemed for “personal use”. So basically take everything you bring out of the original packaging, don’t bring your new laptop in its original seal. Some people have had problems convincing them that second laptop is for personal use, so if you are coming with someone have them carry that second laptop or whatever you have that may be considered extra/not for personal use. Maximum cash you can carry with you into the island is $5000 per person.

If you have to bring something that can’t be removed from the packaging and you need to look up the customs tariff on the item. Google "Customs Anguilla" and click on the "tariffs" link.

Banking:
Most banks will charge an ATM fee and foreign transaction fee (1%-3%). You can avoid the ATM fees and transaction fees by opening an account with Bank of America. Bank of America is in a global alliance with ScotiaBank (which has a branch on the Island). So if you use your Bank of America Debt card at the ScotiaBank ATM you won’t be charged with a ton of crazy fees. Scotia seems to be the most reliable bank on the island, the ATM is available 24/7.

For Canadians you may be able to open an account with another bank that is in the same global alliance (or Scotia Bank Directly) for a link to which banks are in the Global ATM alliance, use wikipedia and search "Global ATM Alliance" for a list of banks that will wave International Fees.

Make sure all your bank cards, licenses, passports will not expire during the 16 months you are on the island.

Lastly Notify All Your Banks that you will be overseas for a long period of time, and that you will be using your Credit cards/Debit Cards overseas. Otherwise they will security lock your accounts, because they will suspect they are stolen.

Financing for school:

The only aid/loans available to students of SJSM is the Delta Loan. They only offer $4500 per semester. You must have a personal credit score of 650, and your cosigner must have a credit score of at least 700. It is really hard to get approved for the loan from what I hear.

Student Loan Options:

You can sign up for online classes with an American school and get a masters while at SJSM. You basically sign up for a masters program in Health Administration or some other kind of master you wish to acquire. You can get a loan (after paying their tuition) of up to 10k per semester. You must maintain a “B” average with the online school.

Online School most SJSM students use: Davenport : For a link to school google "Davenport Masters Programs"
Another Online School others use: Walden University: For a link just google it.

Other options:

Personal Savings

Personal Loan through a Major bank (if you have great credit 700+).

Cashing out your 401k/Taking a loan against your 401k

Taking a loan against your retirement fund

Line of Credit through a Credit Union

Signing up for 10 credit cards and maxing them all out.

Home Equity Loan (basically taking a loan against the value of your house).

Living on the Island/Apartments:
When you come to the island you will need to have previously booked with a hotel. Hotels/resorts in anguilla charge ($500 per night). The most economical option is to book with a bed and breakfast ($150-200 per night).
Apartments on the island range from ($650 - $2500) depending on what you are looking for.

To find roomates: Use the school's "Buddy List", Post on Facebook, Post on ValueMD classifieds.
Best way to get an apartment is to post on Facebook, the classifieds on ValueMd, SJSM Housing Director, or use a trusted island realtor.

A lot of people use this realtor (has nice pictures of apartments): SPI Realty Inc. To find it google: "SPI anguilla"

Don’t pay for an apartment or send money before you get to the island and see the place yourself. The apartments come already furnished.

Shopping: There are supermarkets on the Island. Be prepared to pay a lot for name brand foods that you are used to back home. Some people say they spend $150 per month on groceries; some spend $100 dollars a week. It varies if you plan to eat out a lot or cook at home a lot.

Transportation: Most people buy a car, share a car, or use the bus the school provides. To find a car use the ValueMD classifieds or you can advertise on Facebook to look for a car.Average car costs ($2000 - $4000). Gas on the island approx ($8 dollars per gallon). Average monthly cost of gas approx. $50 (depending on your use and type of car). Cars require a registration sticker (Not sure of the fee, I think I read somewhere it was around $50), you also need to get an island License ($20, and make sure your license from home is not expired), and car insurance (Not sure on pricing, but I will ask and update).

Communication: To call the States/Canada you can get a Magic Jack, Pay for International Unlimited Skype ($3 per month), or sign up for Google talk (free, but requires an active phone number). For your folks back home to talk to you it is cheapest to talk through skype or facebook or some other internet means.
To talk to other students on the island/land lord you can get a cell phone line from one of two companies: Digicel and LIME. I hear people go with LIME because prices are reasonable. You get an Unlocked Blackberry while you are home and bring it with you. Blackberry phones have a free messaging system (BBM) you can use because texting is expensive on the island. A prepaid line from LIME of $20-30 can last you a long time apparently depending on personal use.

Utilities: You can find a place that includes at least Gas + Internet. Most places will make you pay for electric. Average monthly pricing for electric $100 - $130, depending on usage and how long you leave that A/C running. Average Internet pricing (if not already included in rent) is $40-$50 per month.

Technology/Books:

External hard drive (at least 1TB in size)
A large USB/Flash Drive (Minimum 8gb)
Reliable Laptop that has Microsoft Office.
Wireless Router + Long Ethernet Cables

Books:

Disclaimer: People’s choices in text books vary.

The School Recommendation for Books to Bring:

Go to SJSM website Go to the Library Link they have a recommended list for each semester

From a current student. Recommendations for Books to Bring:

"PATH: pathoma, goljan w/ rapid review (copy blue margin bullets into first aid)
PHYSIO: BRS series, Kaplan, Constanzo textbook
PHARM: Kaplan
MICRO: Made simple, kaplan
BIOCHEM: BRS series & Kaplan
GENETICS: Kaplan
BEHAVIOR SCI: Kaplan
NEURO: High yield, Made simple series, Kaplan, BRS series
ANATOMY: kaplan, High yield series
EMBRYO: Kaplan, BRS series
BIOSTATS: kaplan, High yield
Ethics: Fischer
EKG: rapid interpretation
EXTRA:
Class Notes/Slides
First aid + Falcon review audio
Firecracker subscription online"

From another current student. Student's Recommendation List:
"1. MED 1 BOOKS that are good to have in print:

Physiology BRS by Costanzo & Physiology Textbook by Costanzo
(BRS Physiology (Board Review Series) by Costanzo 5th edition)
Physiology(the full textbook) by Costanzo 4th edition (NOT ond PDF!)
(Physiology: with STUDENT CONSULT Online Access, 4e (Costanzo Physiology))
Lippincott's Illustrated Reviews: Biochemistry 5th Edition
Explanation: The larger Costanzo Physiology book is not available in a way that you
would benefit from in PDF(yes there is a ebook 3rd edition pdf where diagrams are split
half way bet. the pages). Physiology BRS by Costanzo I just find easier to follow in print,
but that is just me and it is on pdf. It's just the book is small enough and is SUPER useful
and a must have for Physiology. The Lippincott, yes it is on pdf too but it's a thin but
large page book with a lot of things on one page, so for me it's easier to follow it in print.
I know people who never opened Lippincott, just did powerpoints and were fine for
Biochem, but you might not be one of those people and need the book whether in print
or on pdf."

School Accreditation/Legit-ness:

The school currently has accreditation/listing with:

IMED

ECFMG

CAAM-HP

As long as the school has these accreditations students of SJSM- Anguilla can sit for the USMLE – Step 1 exam. During your time at the school keep checking that the school has these accreditations.

So in my opinion this school is a ticket to sit for the step 1. If you work on it you can become an MD through this school. It may not be Harvard Med but it is a ticket to sit for the Step 1, provided you score well you can find a spot in residency (especially if you want to be a primary care doctor). The proof is in the pudding there are many full MDs from SJSM done with residency you can find with a simple google search.

States you can practice in:

Ok so there seems to be a lot of people who argue back and forth on this topic, and it is a touchy topic for some sensitive people.

California is a hard state to be able to practice in for students of SJSM, that does not mean it is impossible, but it is unlikely that for now we can practice here. A bunch of West coast/ Mid Western states follow California’s approval list, which means you are also going to have a hard time practicing in these states. To find out if your state follows California’s approval list simply google it.

East Coast: New York for example (my state) does not allow most foreign med schools to do their residency here (there are exceptions, someone from SJSM matched to a neurology residency in NY). New York licensing requires that IMGs (foreign doctors), practice at least a minimum of 1 year in another state before they can apply for licensure. I actually googled a SJSM doctor in New York, tracked him down like the stalker I am and talked to him. It isn’t impossible; he practiced for 2 years in Chicago then got licensing in New York. What I plan to do is practice in Illinois (Chicago) for a year or two then apply to the state of my choice. Illinois is IMG (foreign doctor) friendly, most SJSM graduates end up practicing in Illinois.

For any questions, corrections to what I wrote, anything you want to add in general post a message in this thread or Direct Message me.
I'll be updating/editing this original thread post as I receive/amend new info.

Im sure everyone got this email, what are everyone's thought?

We are pleased to announce our IMED listing issue has been RESOLVED

Over the past months we have been working closely with the Dutch Government regarding the school's accreditation.

We have been advised that these discussions have been successful and ourIMED listing is secure. We are now waiting for the official extension notification documentation which is due shortly.

The extension means SJSM Bonaire will continue to operate as normal with the support of the Dutch government and local Bonaire administration. Our students can therefore focus on their medical studies with certainty.

QUESTIONS about SJSM are best answered by SJSM.org and 1-800-542-1553.

If your dream is to become a physician, reading the message boards has nothing to do with the calculus of becoming one! Please understand this.

SJSM is the best in the business and you will never have another Caribbean medical school that treats their students with more respect than this school.

QUESTIONS? THIS BOARD IS NONSENSE! This board will flourish your good mind with nonsense that you will end up trying to wrap your head around.

If your goal is to become a doctor, call SJSM or email them. It is best for you!
