Does SJSM use NBME Shelf Exams to grade part of Clinical Rotations?

M.D. Currently Resident who went to SJSM Bonaire

Well hello all. I thought I might take a moment and share a little. I am now an official MD graduate of SJSM. I went to Bonaire. I completed clinical rotations and matched with a University program and beginning residency. So I know there is all kinds of rumors and people who say this or that. They did it to me while I was there and I was a nervous wreck. I was always worried what people would say on here. Or what others would say once I was done. Fact is the island and SJSM more than most are what you make of it. If you go an kick your heels up don't push yourself then you will certainly meet a wall when you return to the states. However, with that being said the education is there. I passed Step 1 Step 2CK and CS on first attempt with high scores. I worked my butt off on the island and while doing my clinical rotations. So is SJSM the way? Depends on you. Are you ready to work? This should be the question for anyone considering medicine. The school is growing leaps and bounds their facility in Bonaire is very nice. I know I have seen it and been in it. Life on the island WHO CARES you might as well be on Mars because you are there to learn. Spend every second in Bonaire reading and preparing and using the professors. They will answer your questions and help. I emailed many after class, met with them. They were always there to help. My advice remember that the US medical graduate is chosen from people with very good work and study habits. Thus they are prepared to work. Remember that while you are on the island they are in their room in the states studying. So should you. Study when they sleep work hard. SJSM has given me my opportunity. Be excellent in all you do and you will be noticed FMG or not will not matter but you must earn your place as does everyone in medicine it will not be handed to you. So SJSM is a real opportunity with real professors. Whine less work hard and you will be standing at the end. Best of luck to all and know that with SJSM you can succeed and forget all those who say you can't. I have.:-smiley7

I found a few dual head stethoscopes on allheart for about 7$ but goes up to the 100's. any recommendations on scopes? will the 7$ suffice? are the lab coat kits worth buying from SJSM bookstore? or should i just buy the patch and put it on myself? Thanks in advance

Break between MD2 and MD3 semesters

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if current students can give me some insight on the break scheduled between MD2 and MD3. Reading other blogs and talking with a professor at the Anguilla campus, I was told that MD3 is the hardest semester in terms of class load and subject difficulty.

I'm wondering if students stay on the island during this time to get ahead and study? Or do many go home during that break? I have a family occasion during the break and am on the fence on whether I can go or not.

Thanks for any help or feedback!!!

disappointed prospective student about this subforum

I am a prospective student trying to reach out to current students and alumni. I am disappointed by the lack of their presence in this forum. Is it because the school does not have many students? Are the students not caring to their younger schoolmates? Are they too busy with school work?

How about the prospective students? SJMS typically have around 50 new students each semesters, but I've only seen 3-4 active posters .... where are the rest?

Class of January 2014 Bonaire

Hi all,
I was wondering if there is anyone out there planning on starting at St. James Bonaire in January 2014? If so, I'd be interested in networking with future fellow classmates, as I don't have much of an idea on what to expect upon arriving on the island aside from what I've found out through this forum / school website / blogs.

Cheers, and good luck to all.

Bonaire campus closing?

I was recently at a SJSM open house in Toronto where an attendee brought up an issue with the SJSM staff in regards to SJSM being obliged to satisfy M.D. requirements for the Netherlands, and if they fail to do so then SJSM will have to close it's Bonaire doors. Is anyone familiar with this? Will the Bonaire campus be closing? How will this affect current and incoming students to the Bonaire campus?

Thank you for any insight!

To apply or not is the question

Good day-

i am hoping someone will help me out here....I am in the midst of applying to St James but have a question:

1) I had completed my degree for more than 10 years now ( basically am ready to tackle an old dream of med) but lack any physics courses, is that going to affect me tremendously in my basic sciences at med school?
2) I am really confused with clinal rotations vs residency, what's the diff and at which point are u considered a dr...after residency or after USMLEs? Coz if One can't get residency in the US can one opt for Canada or
Uk?

thanks a bunch

Clinical rotation experience Mercy hospital

Has anyone done a rotation at Mercy hospital in Surgery or Internal Medicine or know of anyone who has? I was curious as to how to the schedule and experience is and what benefits we have in doing rotations at Mercy. I heard Internal Medicine is difficult there, but you definitely learn a lot. As far as Surgery rotation, I heard it's tougher than IM and you bring a lot of work home. Any advice or info would be helpful thanks!

Did you take out a lump sum loan or only basic science tuition while on the island...

hello guys incoming student here for 2014,

just curious did you guys take out a lump sum loan for your entire medical education or did you take out loans increments for example take out loan for basic sciences on the island and take out another loan for clinical science when you get to Chicago. does breaking it down really save on interest?

there have been some hints that we(US citizens) may be qualified for US loans/ scholarships for clinicals since we are back in the US...is that true?

Thanks in advance

...is basic sciences truly 16 months from start date, I read on the website that there are breaks of almost two weeks between semesters. is it safe then to count 16 months from my start date?

how did you guys plan your tickets?

Hey guys, I was recently accepted to St. James. I'm in the process of planning on going there. However, I'm looking for a roommate who's also going to be attending St. James starting January 2014. I'm looking for a roommate for a 2 bedroom apartment. Responded if interested.
